  • Tetracycline

Group of wide‐spectrum antibiotics seldom used in treatment of oral infections but may be used for rhinogenic infections. Some are natural (i.e., isolated from certain species of Streptomyces) and others are produced semi‐synthetically. Tetracyclines and their analogs inhibit protein synthesis by their action on microbial ribosomes and have antimatrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity. All have similar…

  • Tessellation

The division of a surface into smaller polygons, yielding a higher level of detail.

  • Terminal jaw relation record

A record of the mandible in relation to the maxilla in the terminal hinge position.

  • Teratogenesis

The production of birth defects in a fetus or embryo, often by a drug. Process by which a harmful stimulus, e.g. drugs, can cause structural congenital malformations, almost always active during the period of embryogenesis. The production of a deformity or other anomaly in the developing fetus. An unusual pattern of development in an embryo…

  • Tenting screw

A metal screw used in guided bone regeneration to support a barrier membrane, thus maintaining a space under the membrane for bone regeneration.

  • Tenting

The adjustment of a barrier membrane to create a space between the membrane and the bone. Tenting screws, poles, or titanium reinforcement assist in the creation of that space. The expansion of the vagina during intercourse.

  • Tent pole procedure

Operation in which the anterior part of an atrophic mandible is exposed by an extraoral approach; periosteum and soft tissues are elevated to expose the superior aspect of the mandible. Dental implants are placed by tenting the soft tissue matrix to prevent graft resorption. Particulate autogenous bone chips are onlayed under the periosteum and around…

  • Tent pole

A mechanical device fixed to the surface of the bone used to elevate a barrier membrane.

  • Tension‐free wound closure

Wound closure that can be obtained without flap tension. Underlying periosteum may need to be released to provide coverage of an augmented site.

  • Tension‐free flap closure

The capacity of a surgical flap to be passively repositioned into its original position, and to maintain that position without the intervention of an operator or the placement of sutures.
