Author: Glossary
-
Implant site development
Alveolar ridge augmentation for future implant placement; requires a staged approach.
-
Implant site
Edentulous area in the alveolar ridge where an implant is planned for support of a restoration. A place in or on the body where the implant is positioned. The location in a jaw bone where a dental prosthesis will be or is seated.
-
Implant shoulder position
Final apicocoronal position of the implant shoulder, as determined by the surgeon, relative to the alveolar crest, i.e., supracrestal, crestal, or subcrestal.
-
Implant shape
Design used to categorize the type of implant, including the overall shape such as cylinder, blade, frame, or button.
-
Implant shaft
Portion of the implant between the coronal and apical ends.
-
Implant selection
Process of choosing the type and size of a dental implant, based on site anatomy, surgical approach, and planned prosthetic reconstruction.
-
Implant scaler
Instrument used for plaque removal and debridement of the periimplant sulcus. A variety of nonmetallic, plastic, graphite, nylon, or teflon‐coated instrument tips are recommended for titanium surfaces.
-
Implant root (syn)
Implant body.
-
Implant retention
Resistance to displacement (vertically) in the plane of placement. Dental implant(s) may be used for prosthesis retention alone or as part of a coupling system providing retention, support, and stability for the prosthesis. Rarely could implants provide retention only without simultaneously providing some degree of prosthesis stability as well.
-
Implant rejection
Failure of a dental implant to achieve osseointegration.
