  • Implant length

    The measurement in millimeters of a two‐piece implant in the coronoapical direction from the edge of the platform to its apex. For a one‐piece implant, the measurement in millimeters in the coronoapical direction of the surface intended for osseointegration.  

  • Implant interface

    The area of contact between tissues (e.g., bone, connective tissue) and the surface of a dental implant.  

  • Implant insertion

    Mechanical act of delivering a dental implant into an osteotomy.  

  • Implant infrastructure

    While a dental implant may have an infrastructure, the proper geometric reference to such an area of the implant is referenced relative to the long axis of the dental implant, in this case, the inferior portion of the dental implant.  

  • Implant head

    For subperiosteal or blade implants, refers to the segment of the implant above the neck and used to connect to the prosthetic reconstruction. Also called abutment.  

  • Implant fracture

    The breakage of a dental implant into two or more parts.  

  • Implant fixture

    A synonym for an implant, especially an endosseous implant.  

  • Implant exposure

    Postoperative condition in which an implant is not completely covered by soft tissues because of wound dehiscence. A second surgical procedure following implant placement is used to access the implant shoulder, remove the healing screw, and replace it with an abutment. This can be accomplished with a punch technique or flap elevation.  

  • Implant drill

    Rotary cutting tool used for creating an osteotomy.  

  • Implant diameter

    Length of the horizontal axis through the center of an implant body. Anchorage components (implants) are available in various diameters and lengths, and the dimensions vary among the various implant manufacturers. The symbol used to reflect the diameter is Ø.
