The sum of a number of measurements divided by the number of units.

A number intended to give a general picture of a group of numbers, such as test scores; in statistics, called a measure of central tendency. The most common type of average is the mean, which is calculated by adding the scores and dividing by the number of scores, as in calculating a grade-point average or cumulative average. However, average may sometimes refer to a median, the score precisely in the middle when the scores are ranked in order, or to a mode, the score that appears most often, as when five people score 75 on a test and no more than two people have any other test score.
A mathematical term which, unless otherwise stated, means the “arithmetic mean.” The average is the result of adding together two or more quantities, and then dividing the sum by the number of quantities. For example, the average length of stay (ALOS) for four people, who stay in the hospital for periods of one, four, five, and eight days, is 4.5 days (1+4 + 5 + 8 = 18 divided by 4).
