Axonotmesis

Nerve injury with loss of axonal continuity, but with maintenance of the myelin sheath. Sensory and/or motor functions are impaired. Recovery may occur after 1–3 months. It may be caused by a drill violating the mandibular canal, an anesthetic needle penetrating the nerve trunk, or excessive reflection.

Nerve injury that damages the nerve tissue without actually severing the nerve.
