Balantidiasis

An infestation of the large intestine by a parasite Balantidium coli, which causes ulceration of the wall of the intestine, leading to diarrhoea and finally dysentery.

An infestation of the large intestine of man with the parasitic protozoan Balantidium coli. Man usually becomes infected by ingesting food or drink contaminated with cysts from the feces of a pig. The parasite invades and destroys the intestinal wall, causing ulceration and necrosis, and the patient may experience diarrhea and dysentery. Balantidiasis is a rare cause of dysentery, mainly affecting farm workers; it is treated with various antibiotics, carbarsone, and diiodohydroxyquinoline.
