The presence of bilirubin in the blood.
An excess of the bile pigment bilirubin in the blood. Normally there is under 1.3 mg bilirubin per 100 ml blood; when the concentration of bilirubin is above 3 mg per 100 ml, visible jaundice occurs.
Bilirubin in the blood, usually in excessive amounts. Bilirubin normally is present in the blood in small amounts. It increases, however, in diseases in which there is excessive destruction of red blood cells or interference with bile excretion; the amount is also increased when the liver is diseased or damaged. Also called hyperbilirubinemia.
