Birthing room

An area set up for childbirth in a hospital or other building to provide comfortable and homely surroundings.

A room in which a woman can give birth in a homelike, relaxed setting, often attached to a hospital but sometimes in a freestanding maternity center. Developed largely in response to the perceived coldness of traditional hospital delivery rooms, birthing rooms often have homelike furniture, allow birth to take place without changing rooms (as from labor room to delivery room), and sometimes allow family members (not just the birth partner) to attend the birth if desired. Some birthing rooms provide special birthing beds or birthing chairs that allow a woman to give birth from a sitting or semireclining position, often with a lower section of the chair or bed dropped down during actual delivery. Birthing rooms are used only for low-risk pregnancies, and if complications occur, the mother and child will need to be moved into regular delivery rooms; in some emergency situations this results in dangerous loss of time.

Room, usually in a hospital or other health facility, set aside for childbirth. The room is usually designed to be warm, friendly, and familial.

A “homelike” hospital room which is both a labor room and delivery room. Usually the father is permitted to be present for the delivery.

A hospital room that resembles a bedroom, used for childbirth.
