Buffalo hump

A deposit of fat in the lower midcervical and upper thoracic area of the back. It is usually caused by excessive adrenocortical hormone production or therapy.


A buffalo hump refers to an accumulation of fatty tissue beneath the skin on the back of the neck. This condition may arise as a consequence of prolonged treatment with high doses of corticosteroid medications or due to the presence of Cushing’s syndrome.
