Bundle branch block

An unusual condition of the heart’s conduction tissue.

Ineffectual or no trans-mission of the electrical impulses (governing the heart beat) from the heart’s atrium to the ventricle.

A delay or obstruction in the passage of electrical impulses through the ventricles (lower chambers) of the heart. The delayed signal makes a detour around the damaged area, so that the affected ventricle still beats but slightly slower than its counterpart. Bundle branch block may have the effect of slowing the heartbeat.

A defect in the specialized conducting tissue of the heart that is recognized as an electrocardiographic abnormality. Left or right bundle branch blocks, affecting the respective ventricles, may be seen. Occasionally both left and right bundle branch block occur simultaneously and the patient develops complete ‘heart block. The causes are similar to those of complete heart block.

An abnormality of the conduction of electrical impulses through the ventricles of the heart, resulting in delayed depolarisation of the ventricular muscle. The electrocardiograph shows characteristic widening of the QRS complexes. Abnormalities of the right and left bundle branches cause delayed contraction of the corresponding ventricle.

Defect in the heart’s electrical conduction system in which there is failure of conduction down one of the main branches of the bundle of His. On the surface electrocardiogram, the QRS complex is >0.12 sec. and its shape is altered.
