Butyrophenones

A subgroup of conventional antipsychotic drugs with a similar chemical structure (a piperidine ring with a three-carbon chain to which is attached a carbonyl-fluorobenzene ring). Haloperidol (haldol) is the best-known member of this class and perhaps the most widely used conventional antipsychotic medication.

Butyrophenones are a group of drugs, including haloperidol, used to treat psychotic illness.


A class of drugs, some of which are used to treat psychoses, acute agitation, Tourette’s syndrome, and other disorders. Tardive dyskinesia may be a side effect of prolonged use.
