CAM photosynthesis

Crassulacean acid metabolism is a carbon fixation pathway specific to some plants growing under arid conditions. These plants collect CO2 only during the night which is stored as a 4-carbon malate; during the day, when stomata are closed, this is transported to chloroplasts where it is converted to CO2 and then used for conventional photosynthesis (C3).
