Caput

The head.

The top of part of something.

The term “caput” originates from the Latin word for “head.” It is commonly used to describe the caput succedaneum, which refers to a temporary, soft swelling on the scalp of newborn babies caused by pressure during labor. Historically, the term “caput” was also employed to denote the face, skull, and related organs, as well as the point of origin of a muscle. Furthermore, it could describe any enlarged extremity, such as the caput femoris, which refers to the head of the femur (thigh bone).
