Carbonic anhydrase

An enzyme which acts as a buffer and regulates the body’s water balance, including gastric acid secretion and aqueous humour production.

enzyme found in the stomach, pancreas, kidneys, and red blood cells that catalyzes the interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into carbonic acid (H2CO3), protons (H+), and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-): CO2 + H2O ↔ H2CO3 ↔ H+ + HCOs’. It enables red blood cells to transport carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs, the stomach and pancreas to secrete massive amounts of acid and bicarbonate, respectively, and the kidneys to maintain acid-base and fluid balance.

An enzyme that catalyzes union of water and carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid, or performs the reverse action. It is present in red blood cells.
