Carboxylase

An enzyme which catalyzes the addition of a carboxyl group to a carbon chain. This enzyme class usually requires thiamin as thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP) as a coenzyme.

An enzyme that catalyzes the addition of a carboxyl group to a molecule. Found in brewer’s yeast, it catalyzes the decarboxylation of pyruvic acid by producing acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide. In the body, this process requires the presence of vitamin B1 (thiamine), which acts as a coenzyme.
