Cardioplegia

The stopping of a patient’s heart, by chilling it or using drugs, so that heart surgery can be performed.

Deliberate and temporary paralysis of the heart for the purpose of performing surgery on the heart.

A procedure whereby the heart is stopped by reducing its temperature (hypothermia); by injecting the muscle with a solution of salts; or by electrostimulation. This enables surgeons to operate safely on the heart.

Intentional, temporary arrest of cardiac function by means of hypothermia, medication, or electrical stimuli to reduce the need of the myocardium for oxygen. This is done during surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.
