  • Average evoked potential

    A test using electricity to detect the responses of certain nerve pathways, to diagnose various nervous diseases.  

  • Autogenous vaccine

    A vaccine produced by culturing a patient’s own bacteria. Bacterial vaccine prepared from lesions of the individual to be inoculated. A vaccine created from bacteria present within the patient’s own body. A vaccine produced using a culture of a microorganism obtained from the patient’s own body.  

  • Autoantigen

    An antigen produced by the body that induces antibody production. A “self’ antigen in autoimmune disease. Autoantigens on the cell surface of body tissues are part of the process in which an immune response by B lymphocytes or self-reacting T lymphocytes causes damage to the tissues with the autoantigen.  

  • Australian antigen

    An antigen often found in the serum of people who have had hepatitis; the blood test for this antigen is used to detect serum hepatitis (type B) and to differentiate type B from type A hepatitis.  

  • Auscultation and percussion

    Listening to the sounds in, and tapping different parts of, the body to determine various functions and abnormalities.  

  • Atypical cells of undetermined significance

    Unusual cells found in laboratory examination whose importance has not been determined in relation to the patient’s condition.

    Impaired electrical conduction (regulating the heartbeat) between the atria and the ventricles of the heart.   • Atherosclerotic heart disease

    An illness in which the arteries of the heart become thick, harden, and lose elasticity. This eventually slows or stops the flow of blood, depriving tissues of needed blood supply, and may cause angina or a heart attack.  

  • Ascorbic acid tolerance

    A test to determine the extent of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) deficiency. Blood levels are measured following administration of a known amount of ascorbic acid.  

  • Arylsulfatase A

    An enzyme; a test is done on urine to aid the diagnosis of cancer of the bladder, colon, or rectum and several other conditions.
