Corona radiata sign
Filaments extending outward from a radiographically visualized mass. The presence of such filaments suggests that the mass is growing centrifugally and therefore may be malignant.

Chandelier sign
Intense pelvic and lower abdominal pain brought on by palpation of the cervix. The sign points to the presence of pelvic inflammatory disease.

Cardiovascular shunt
An abnormal connection between the cavities of the heart or between the systemic and pulmonary vessels.

Compensated shock
The early phase of shock in which the body’s compensatory mechanisms (e.g., increased heart rate, vasoconstriction, increased respiratory rate) are able to maintain adequate perfusion to the brain and vital organs. Typically, the patient is normotensive in compensated shock.
