  • Cloudy swelling

    A degeneration of tissues marked by a cloudy appearance, swelling, and the appearance of tiny albuminoid granules in the cells as observed with a microscope. The deterioration and enlargement of tissues that occur as a result of an inflammatory condition.  

  • Calabar swelling

    A swelling occurring in infestations by the nematode Loa loa. Temporary and painless, the swelling is thought to be the result of temporary sensitization.  

  • Cranial suture

    One of the sutures between the bones of the skull.  

  • Cobbler’s suture

    A suture in which the thread has a needle at each end. Also known as double-armed suture.  

  • Coaptation suture

    A preliminarily placed suture to approximate wound edges before definitive closure.  

  • Catgut suture

    A suture material made from the sterilized submucosa of the small intestine of sheep. Eventually it is absorbed by body fluids. Treatment with chromium trioxide (chromic catgut) or other chemicals delays the absorption time.  

  • Colloid suspension

    A colloidal solution in which particles of the dispersed phase are relatively large.  

  • Cephalic suspension

    The supported suspension of a patient by the head to extend the vertebral column.  

  • Conservative surgery

    Surgery in which as much as possible of a part or structure is retained. It is often an equally effective alternative to radical surgery. Surgery carried out to preserve a part rather than to remove it.  

  • Colorectal surgery

    Operative procedures on the anus, rectum, or large intestine.
