  • District

    In politics, the division of the state represented by a legislator, designated numerically or by geographic boundaries.  

  • Distributive bargaining

    In labor relations, negotiations whereby the gain of one party represents a loss to the other party.  

  • Distribution curve

    In statistics, a graphic representation that reflects the way observations distribute themselves. The frequency of the observations are plotted along a vertical axis and the type of observations are plotted along the horizontal axis: normal curve.  

  • Distributed practice

    A system of practice schedules separated by either rest or some activity that is different from the one being practiced.  

  • Distracters

    In evaluation, words or phrases in a test that are incorrect and require the learner to discriminate in order to correctly complete the test item. An integral part of a multiple-choice question.  

  • Distortion

    In optics, optical bending of straight lines, thus producing distortion in the appearance of the specimen. The act of twisting part of the body out of its usual shape.

    In genetics, a hybrid in which intermediate inheritance is expressed.  

  • Distinctive features

    Particular features or objects or events that enable them to be readily discriminated from other objects or events.  

  • Distilled spirits

    Alcoholic beverages containing from 40% to 50% alcohol by volume, made from fermented mixtures of cereal grains or fruits that are heated in a still.  

  • Distention

    The state of being inflated or enlarged, particularly of the abdomen. The condition of being expanded or extended beyond normal.
