Distraction device
An appliance that allows gradual incremental movement of bone segments away from each other.
-
Distraction axis
The direction in which the bone segment is distracted during distraction osteogenesis.
-
Distoversion
A deviation or positioning towards the distal. Any deviation along the median sagittal plane directed from the incisors to the retromolar pads.
-
Distocclusion
The clinical situation where at maximum intercuspation, the mandibular teeth have a distal relationship to the maxillary teeth as in an Angle’s Class II occlusion.
-
Distance osteogenesis
A gradual process of bone healing from the edge of an osteotomy toward a dental implant. Initially, bone does not grow directly onto the implant surface.
-
Distal wedge
A periodontal surgical intervention at the distal area of a terminal tooth in an arch. The goal is to remove excessive tissue, reduce periodontal pocket depth, and facilitate oral hygiene at the area.
-
Distal extension prosthesis
As seen in the median sagittal plane, a prosthesis addition posterior to the most distal tooth or implant abutment. The extension can be uni‐ or bilateral and in the form of an artificial tooth or teeth, a cantilever for a fixed prosthesis, or a denture base segment for a removable partial denture.
-
Distal extension partial denture
The boundaries of a removable partial denture distal to the terminal tooth. A removable partial denture prosthesis that does not have a natural abutment tooth at the distal aspect either on one or both sides; rather, the distal tooth at the distal aspect is an artificial tooth provided by the prosthesis.
-
Distal extension
Edentulous space posterior to the most distal tooth or implant abutment.

Distal
Remote; farther from the point of reference; away from the median sagittal plane of the face following the curvature of the dental arch. Furthest from the place of attachment (e.g. the tip is the distal part of a leaf ). In pollen, that part of the grain facing opposite the centre of the tetrad during…
