  • Dimensional stability

The capacity of a material or substance to maintain its shape and size when subjected to various environmental changes, including moisture, temperature, and stress.

  • Dilaceration

A tearing apart. In dentistry, a condition due to injury of a tooth during its development and characterized by a band or crease at the junction of the crown and root, or alternatively by tortuous roots with abnormal curvatures. A tearing apart, as of a cataract.

  • Digital workflow

Any workflow that occurs primarily through the use of converting physical or “analog” structures into a digital format to be manipulated using CAD software. Often, the digital process resembles the analog process in steps, but is accomplished virtually on a computer until the design is machine fabricated through automated milling or 3D printing methods.

  • Digital sculpting

The use of software that offers tools to push, pull, smooth, grab, pinch or otherwise manipulate a digital object as if it were made of a real‐life substance such as clay. When creating 3D models in an application, this includes manipulating vertices and edges to get the desired look. While this works, it can be…

  • Digital print/printing

Method of printing from a digital‐based image directly to a variety of media. It usually refers to professional printing where small‐run jobs from desktop publishing and other digital sources are printed using large‐format and/or high‐volume laser or inkjet printers or 3D printers.

  • Digital imaging

Computer‐based digital technology allowing the dentist to create true‐to‐life photographs of the dentition, as if the recommended procedures had already been completed. The capture and production of an image of an object, either on film or on a computerized display, where it can be reformatted and analyzed. Commonly used imaging modalities include x-rays, ultrasound, and…

  • Digital denture

A complete denture created by or through automation using CAD, CAM, and CAE in lieu of traditional processes. A digital denture is achieved when the final shape of the denture is manufactured through automation to ensure there are no conventional errors from pouring, investment casting, or injecting the material as done in traditional denture fabrication.…

  • Differential diagnosis

The distinguishing of a disease or pathological condition from others presenting similar signs. The process whereby multiple possible disorders are considered by a clinician to formulate a final diagnosis. The identification of one disease from a number of other similar diseases by comparing the range of symptoms of each. Systematic method for diagnosing a disorder…

  • Dietary analysis

The evaluation of a diet on the basis of its content, quality, and nutrients in order to determine any imbalance or deficiency that might contribute to a disease process.

  • Die spacer

An agent applied to a die to provide space for the luting agent in the finished casting.
