  • Dilation of the heart

    Enlargement of the chambers of the heart, typically because of diseases of the heart valves or cardiomyopathy. It may result in congestive heart failure.

    Stiffness and fibrotic contractures of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints in patients with advanced diabetes mellitus.  

  • Dental hammer

    A mallet or motor-driven hammer used for condensing direct-filling gold or silver amalgam during the placement of fillings in teeth.  

  • Dentate gyrus

    A gyrus marked by indentations that lie on the upper surface of the hippocampal gyrus.  

  • Dysfunctional grieving

    Extended, unsuccessful use of intellectual and emotional responses by which individuals (families, communities) attempt to work through the process of modifying self concept based upon the perception of potential loss.  

  • Dental granuloma

    A granuloma developing at the tip of a tooth root, usually the result of pulpitis. It consists of a proliferating mass of chronic inflammatory tissue and possibly epithelial nests or colonies of bacteria. It may be encapsulated by fibrous tissue of the periodontal ligament.  

  • Delta granule

    A small granule in the delta cells of the pancreas.  

  • Delayed graft

    A skin graft that is partially elevated and then replaced so that it may be moved later to another site.  

  • Diving goiter

    A movable goiter, located either below or above the sternal notch.
