  • Expiratory resistance

    The use of a restricted orifice, or flow resistor, during positive pressure ventilation to retard the flow of exhaled gases.  

  • Erythema-producing ray

    Ultraviolet radiation (wavelengths between 2050 and 3100 A.U.) capable of reddening skin.  

  • Exogenous purine

    Purine present in, or derived from, foods.  

  • Endogenous purine

    Purine originating from nucleoproteins within the tissues.  

  • Exploratory puncture

    Piercing of a cavity or cyst for the purpose of examining the fluid or pus removed.  

  • Efflux pump

    A cell membrane protein channel that selectively admits or excludes chemicals from the cytoplasm. In some bacteria efflux pumps prevent their cells from accumulating antibiotics, contributing to drug resistance.  

  • Entoptic pulse

    Intermittent subjective sensations of light that accompany the heartbeat. A phenomenon occasionally experienced after intense physical activity where, with each heartbeat, one’s vision dims. This is attributed to the retinal rods being mechanically irritated by the pulsating retinal arteries. Individuals often describe this feeling as impending blackouts.  

  • Exposed pulp

    Pulp that, due to disease, is exposed to the air and saliva in the mouth.  

  • Enamel pulp

    Cells forming a stellate reticulum lying between outer and inner layers of the enamel organ of a tooth. The gel-like cells situated between the exterior and interior enamel layers of a tooth’s enamel organ.
