Erythremic myelosis
A malignancy involving the erythropoietic tissue. Symptoms and signs include anemia, fever, hepatosplenomegaly, bleeding tendency, and abnormal cells in the circulating blood. Also known as Di Guglielmo syndrome.

Development of myeloid elements (erythrocytes and granular leukocytes) in regions other than bone marrow.

Escape mutation
A mutation in a cell or organism that allows it either to resist treatment or to avoid destruction by the immune system.

Eccentric muscle contraction
Lengthening of the muscle as it contracts against resistance. An example would be the lowering of the body from a position in which the body was supported by the flexed arms, i.e., holding on to a bar above the head.

External intercostal muscle
The outer layer of muscles between the ribs, originating on the lower margin of each rib and inserted on the upper margin of the next rib. During inspiration, they draw adjacent ribs together, pulling them upward and outward, and increasing the volume of the chest cavity. They are controlled by the intercostal nerves.

A cardiac murmur produced outside the cavities of the heart.

An abnormal sound produced by any cause and arising within the heart.
