Heavy chain

Higher center
A center in any portion of the brain, in contrast to one in the spinal cord.

One of two centers, a heat loss and a heat production center, located in the hypothalamus. They regulate body temperature.

Hyperchromatic cell
All or part of a cell that contains more than the normal number of chromosomes and hence stains more densely.

Horizontal cell
A neuron of the inner nuclear layer of the retina. The axons of these cells run horizontally and connect various parts of the retina.

Holly leaf cell
A cell found in blood smears of persons with sickle cell anemia.

Heparin-bonded catheter
A pulmonary artery catheter with a heparin coating to reduce the risk of thrombus formation.

Homogeneous catalyst
A catalyst that exists in the same phase as the chemicals it influences and the reactions it produces.

Hyaline cast
The most common form of cast found in the urine, transparent, pale, and having homogeneous rounded ends. It may be a benign finding, or may be present in fevers, stress, kidney disease, or unchecked hypertension.

Hospital case management
A system of patient care delivery in which a case manager, typically a registered nurse, coordinates interdisciplinary care for a group of patients. The advantages of hospital case management are improved quality, continuity of care, and decreased hospital costs.
