  • Homodimerization

The polymerization of two like compounds to DNA.

  • Homocystinuria

A rare genetic disease characterized by a high level of homocystine in the urine due to an error in the gene for the vitamin B6-dependent enzyme cystathionine synthetase. Homocystinuria is a congenital disease due to the inability of the affected individual to metabolise, or to utilise properly, one of the essential amino acids known as…

  • Hla genes

Genes that encode elements of the immune system, specifically those that dictate the formation of antibodies by white blood cells (leukocytes).

  • Histidinemia

A rare genetic disease characterized by an excess amount of histidine in the blood. A hereditary metabolic disease caused by lack of the enzyme histidine ammonialyase, which is normally present in the urine.

  • Histamine releasers

Biologically active substances that can be involved in the pharmacological reactions of food intolerance. Known histamine releasers are lectins, present in certain legumes, fruits, and oat. Furthermore, foodstuffs like chocolate, strawberries, tomato, fish, eggs, pineapple, ethanol, and meat have been reported to cause histamine release. Symptoms following non-immunoglobulin E-mediated histamine release resemble allergic symptoms.

  • Hindmilk

Milk produced by the mammary gland at or near the end of the lactation period. Milk released late in breastfeeding, distinguished by its high fat content.

  • High fiber diet

Diet characterized by significantly more fiber-containing foods than the norm; most high-fiber diets provide at least 20-35 g of mixed fiber daily.

  • High energy compound

A compound having high-energy phosphate bonds. When these bonds are broken, a large amount of energy is released.

  • Hiatal hernia

Protrusion of the stomach through the esophageal opening into the chest cavity. Protrusion of the stomach and abdominal contents through the hiatal opening due to weakness in the diaphragm. A type of hernia in which the stomach protrudes through a weakened portion of the diaphragm; may cause ulcer-like symptoms. Protrusion of part of the stomach…

  • Hexose monophosphate shunt

An alternative pathway for the metabolism of glucose. The shunt provides an alternative pathway for the use of glucose-6-phosphate and generates phosphorylated ribose for use in nucleotide synthesis. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the glucose-6- phosphate generated from glucose is metabolized by the shunt.
