Lactotrope cell
A cell in the anterior pituitary that produces the hormone prolactin.

A cell that is always mitotically active, such as the epithelial cells lining the stomach and the stem cells in the red bone marrow.

Laryngeal cavity

Laser capsulotomy
The use of a laser to make a hole in the capsule surrounding the lens of the eye to let light pass. Extracapsular removal of a cataract allows the capsule surrounding the lens to remain in the eye; however, if the capsule becomes cloudy, laser capsulotomy is used to restore vision.

A transparent, elastic, connective tissue membrane that surrounds and encloses the lens of the eye.

The amount of heat needed to change the temperature of 1 kg of water from 14.5°C to 15.5°C. It is commonly used in metabolic studies and in reference to human nutrition. It is always capitalized.

Left bundle branch block
Defect in the conduction system of the heart in which electrical conduction down the left bundle branch is delayed. On the 12-lead EKG, it gives the QRS complex a widened QS complex in lead V1 (0.12 sec.).

Lung bud
In the embryo, a pouch that grows out of each side of the developing foregut tube beginning at stage 12 (26 days). It pushes into the primitive pleural coeloms and continues to elongate and branch to become the embryonic lung.

In the embryo, a clump of cells that is the precursor of one of the four limbs.
