  • Mini-cog

    A screening test used to detect cognitive deficits present in patients with dementia. Patients are asked to draw a clock face and to remember three objects. The test is easier to administer than the 30-component Mini-Mental State Examination, another screening test for cognitive impairment.  

  • Mineral spring

    A natural water source which contains dissolved mineral salts, including calcium, fluoride, magnesium, potassium, and sodium (among others).  

  • Mineralization

    Normal or abnormal deposition of minerals in tissues. The mechanism through which the body harnesses minerals to construct the framework of bones.  

  • Mind map

    A method of learning or organizing data in which a person starts with a central concept and then arranges related concepts, facts, and ideas around it in a way that helps the cartographer make sense of the material.  

  • Mindfulness-based stress reduction

    The use of meditation and self-awareness to enhance one’s ability to cope with challenging circumstances and psychological tensions. A mindfulness-based psychological intervention program pioneered by Kabat-Zinn designed to treat stress and some types of psychological disorders and medical conditions.  

  • Mimotope

    A small peptide that elicits a stronger antibody response than the polysaccharide or nucleic acid antigen that it is designed to mimic. Polysaccharide and nucleic acid antigens are often weakly immunogenic.

    A form of stuttering in which the “m” sound is inappropriately used.  

  • Mimivirus

    A massive double-stranded DNA virus, first identified in an ameba in 2003, so large that it appears to be a bacterium when seen under light microscopy. It has been identified in some patients with pneumonia.
