  • Marsupialize

    To form a pouch surgically, as in treatment of a cyst by opening it, draining it, and suturing the edges to adjacent tissues.  

  • Marseilles fever

    Disease, common around the Mediterranean area and in India, caused by a rickettsia (Rickettsia co-norii) transmitted by the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). It is characterized by chills, fever, a black-crusted ulcer at the side of the tick bite, and a rash. Also called bouton-neuse fever; Indian tick fever; Kenya fever.  

  • Marcoglobulin

    High molecular weight protein normally found in the blood in small amounts; increased in various disease states (e.g., multiple myeloma, lupus, liver cirrhosis), resulting in marcoglobulinemia.

    In genetics, process of locating genes on a chromosome; also called chromosome mapping.  

  • Maneuver

    Manipulation; movement of parts or a change of position, usually done by use of the hands (e.g., manipulation of a fetus to aid delivery); also refers to a particular set of actions performed as part of a physical examination (e.g., a Valsalva maneuver consists of bearing down while holding the breath).

  • Mamma

    Mammae, breast; milk-giving gland in the female. A glandular structure beneath the skin in the female that secretes milk. In the human female, there are normally two, situated over the anterolateral area between the third and sixth ribs. The nipple of each breast extends from the glandular tissue through the surface of the skin.

    Any of a number of small bodies in the cortex of the kidney that contain a Bow¬ man’s capsule and glomerulus.  

  • Malignant neoplasm

    Tumor that tends to grow and spread to other body parts; also called malignant tumor. Growth that infiltrates tissue, metastasizes, and often recurs after attempts at surgical removal.  

  • Malathion poisoning

    Toxic condition caused by ingestion or inhalation of the insecticide malathion; it is characterized by vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, weakness, breathing difficulties, and confusion. Treatment includes atropine, gastric lavage, respiratory assistance, cathartics, and oxygen.
