  • Normal anxiety

    Anxiety as experienced by most people controls behavior without producing maladjustment pathological anxiety.  

  • Norm

    A widely shared pattern of behavior.    

  • Nonverbal communication

    The sharing of meanings in a social setting without the use of words. In interpersonal relationships, the use of communication techniques that do not involve words. A grimace, shrug, silence, smile, wink, raised eyebrows, avoidance, turning away, or even fighting are examples of nonverbal communication.  

  • Nontraditional students

    An administrative term used by-colleges and universities to describe students who are pursuing undergraduate degrees at an age other than that associated with traditional college years.  

  • Nonsuit

    A judgment against a plaintiff when he or she is unable to prove a case or when the case is not pursued to trial.  

  • Nonspecific vaginitis

    A classification used when all the symptoms of vaginitis are present but no specific cause can be found. A rare condition in which no particular factor or etiological agent is identifiable; a contact-related allergic response may be involved. The inflammation usually resolves spontaneously. Treatments include topical creams and ointments.  

  • Nonspecific urethritis (NSU)

    An inflammation of the urethra before a causative agent was known. Since 1974, is referred to as nongonococcal urethritis.  

  • Nonspecific presentation of illness

    Symptoms appearing in a person that do not clearly indicate a single disease or single organ system disorder. Older persons more than those in other age groups come to the attention of health care providers due to nonspecific reasons.  

  • Nonspecific immune mechanism

    A part of the body’s immune system that is activated regardless of the nature of the invading foreign substance, specific immune mechanism.  

  • Nonspecific effects

    The effects of a drug that are not directly associated with the chemical action of the drug, placebo effect.
