  • Nucleic base

    In molecular biology, a ring-shaped chemical (either a purine or a pyrimidine) that specifies the coded genetic structure of DNA and RNA. DNA is made up of the bases adenosine, cytosine, thymine, and guanine; RNA contains uracil, in place of thymine.

  • Nocturnal asthma

    An increase in asthmatic symptoms during sleep. Nocturnal asthma may be caused by a variety of conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux, allergens in the bedroom, circadian variations in circulating hormone levels, or inadequate doses of antiasthmatic medications at night. Treatment is tailored to the underlying cause.  

  • Neurocirculatory asthenia

    A somatoform disorder marked by mental and physical fatigue, dyspnea, giddiness, precordial pain, and palpitation, especially on exertion. The cause is unknown but the condition occurs in those under stress. It is common among soldiers in combat. Psychotherapy and removal of the stress situation are needed.  

  • Neuropathic arthropathy

    Bone, cartilage, and joint disruption or destruction that occurs because of diminished sensation in a limb (e.g., Charcot’s joint).  

  • Nasal arch

    Arch formed by the nasal bones and by the nasal processes of the maxilla.  

  • Nuclear antigen

    An antigen present in the cells of patients with certain types of connective tissue disorders. Corticosteroids can be very helpful in treating patients with high concentrations of nuclear antigen.  

  • Natural antibody

    An antibody present in a person without known exposure to the specific antigen, such as an anti-A antibody in a person with B blood type.  

  • Narrow-spectrum antibiotic

    An antibiotic that is specifically effective against a limited group of microorganisms.  

  • Normocytic anemia

    Anemia in which the size and hemoglobin content of red blood cells remain normal.
