  • Occipito-anterior

    Referring to a position of a baby during birth, in which the baby faces the mother’s back. A term used to describe the position of the baby’s head before birth, where the back of the skull is oriented toward the front of the mother’s abdomen.  

  • Occipital notch

    A point on the lower edge of the cerebral hemisphere where the surface has a notch.

    A round part of the occipital bone which joins it to the atlas.

  • Obturation

    The act of obstructing a body passage, or the state of a body passage when it is obstructed, e.g. by hard faeces. Closure of a passage or opening, as in intestinal obstruction.  

  • Obtrusive

    Forcing your presence on others. Referring to a scar which is very noticeable.  

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

    The stopping of breathing, or difficulty in breathing, during sleep, resulting in loud snoring. A kind of sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway is repeatedly blocked during sleep, leading to difficulties in breathing.  

  • Obstructive lung disease

    Bronchitis and emphysema.  

  • Obstructive jaundice

    Jaundice caused by an obstruction of the bile ducts. Yellowish discoloration of skin and sclera due to a gallstone or other pathology blocking the flow of bile in the bile ducts (obstructive cholangitis).
