  • Omental recess

    One of three pocket-like extensions of the omental bursa. The superior recess extends upward behind the caudate lobe of the liver, the inferior recess extends downward into the great omentum, and the lineal recess extends laterally to the hilus of the spleen.  

  • Occlusion of the pupil

    A pupil with an opaque membrane shutting off the pupillary area.  

  • Onset of puberty

    Between the ages of 13 and 15, a relatively rapid increase in height and weight occurs, with broadening of the shoulders and increase in size of the penis and testicles. Pubic and facial hair begin to grow. Endocrine and sebaceous gland activity is increased. Nocturnal emissions usually occur.

  • Orthostatic proteinuria

    Protein in the urine when the patient has been standing but not while reclining.  

  • Opening pressure

    The pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid that is detected just after a needle is placed into the spinal canal. It is normally 100 to 180 mm H20.  

  • Oblique presentation

    Presentation in which the long axis of the fetus is oblique to that of the mother.  

  • Ovarian pregnancy

    Implantation of the embryo in the substance of the ovary. The growth of a fertilized egg cell inside the ovary. This is also known as ovariocyesis.  

  • Orthotonos posture

    Posture in which the neck and trunk are extended rigidly in a straight line; seen in tetanus, strychnine poisoning, rabies, and meningitis.  

  • Orthopnea posture

    Posture in which the patient sits upright, hands or elbows resting upon some support; seen in asthma, emphysema, dyspnea, ascites, effusions into the pleural and pericardial cavities, and congestive heart failure.
