  • Oroantral fistula

    A communicating tract between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, occasionally resulting from the extraction of the first or second molar. It may become infected. Treatment varies with the size of the defect. Small lesions heal spontaneously; larger ones may be repaired with flap surgery or with prostheses.  

  • Obstetric fistula

    A complication of excessively prolonged labor and childbirth in which the blood supply to the vagina is interrupted, leading to tissue death and the development of a tract between the vagina and the large bowel or the urinary bladder.  

  • Occipitoparietal fissure

    The fissure between the occipital and parietal lobes of the brain.  

  • Optical filter

    A device that passes only a portion of the visible light spectrum. Absorption filters absorb the unwanted wavelengths. Interference filters employ the wave effects of constructive and destructive superposition to pass or inhibit appropriate wavelengths.  

  • Oxytalan fiber

    Bundles of thin, acid-resistant fibrils found in the periodontium.  

  • Oxalic acid fermentation

    Formation of oxalic acid from carbohydrates by the action of certain molds, especially Aspergillus.  

  • Orthochromatic erythrocyte

    An RBC that stains with acid stains only, the cytoplasm appearing pink.  

  • Oxidizing enzyme

    An enzyme that catalyzes oxidative reactions.  

  • Olivary eminence

    An oval projection at the upper part of the medulla oblongata above the extremity of the lateral column.  

  • Oxygen electrode

    An electrode invented by Dr. Leland Clark, used to measure the partial pressure of oxygen (Po2), usually in arterial blood (blood gas).
