  • Palatine raphe

A line or ridge in the median line of the palate. The raphe appears as a whitish line, which sometimes turns into a slight groove at its posterior end.

  • Prison rape

Rape that occurs when the victim is assaulted by another prisoner or by a prison employee.

  • Passive range of motion

The possible excursion of motion at a joint, accomplished by an examiner, without any muscle contraction by the patient. This can be measured by a goniometer. The excursion is normally slightly greater than active range of motion. The examiner assesses the end point.

  • Pubic ramus

Either of the two barlike processes of the pubic bone that extend laterally and posteriorly from the pubic symphysis. The inferior ramus articulates with the ischium; the superior ramus articulates with the ilium and forms the front of the acetabulum.

  • Posterior ramus

The branch of a spinal nerve carrying motor axons to and sensory axons from the deep (intrinsic) muscles of the back and the skin that overlies them.

  • Posteroanterior radiograph

A frontal radiograph of the skull. It is used to examine the skull for disease, trauma, and developmental abnormalities.

  • Panoramic radiograph

A type of extraoral curved-surface radiograph that shows the entire upper and lower jaws in a continuous single film.

  • Primary radiation

That radiation being emitted directly to the patient from an x-ray source. Radiation arriving directly from its source without interaction with matter.

  • Photothermal radiation

Radiation of heat by a source of light, as that from an electric bulb.

  • Photochemical radiation

Light rays that penetrate tissues only fractions of a millimeter, are absorbed by cells, and cause physical and biological changes. This type of radiation causes surface heating.
