    A heterocyclic substance that provides the building blocks for a large number of vital compounds such as hemoglobin, chlorophyll, and bile acids. It is a colorless liquid with the odor of chloroform.  

  • Pyroxylin

    Nitrocellulose in ether or acetone. It is a toxic and extremely flammable white fiber used in lacquers, plastics, and resins, among other applications.

    An enzyme that catalyzes splitting of phosphoric groups.

    A histological stain used to demonstrate the presence of RNA and DNA.  

  • Pyrometer

    A device for measuring a very high temperature. A device used to measure heat levels that exceed the capacity of a standard thermometer.  

  • Pyroglobulinemia

    An obsolete term for paraproteinemia.  

  • Pyrithiamine

    A synthetic analog of thiamine that blocks thiamine transport. It was used experimentally in studies of human lymphoblasts to mimic nutritional diseases such as beriberi and Wemicke-Korsakoff syndrome, two forms of thiamine deficiency.
