  • Pinhole pupil

    A pupil of minute size; one excessively constricted; seen after use of miotics, in opium poisoning, and in certain brain disorders.  

  • Pupa

    The stage in complete metamorphosis of an insect that follows the larva and precedes the adult or imago. The insect does not feed during this stage and usually is inactive.  

  • Pungency

    The quality of being sharp, strong, or bitter, as an odor or taste.  

  • Punctoplasty

    An operation to improve the drainage of tears through the lacrimal punctum of the eye when that opening is partly or completely blocked. The procedure is used to treat excessive tearing.  

  • Punctate rash

    A rash with minute red points.  

  • Punctate pits

    Depressed areas of the skin, especially of the palmar creases of the hands and soles.  

  • Punctate keratoses

    Discrete yellow-to-brown firm papules of the palms and soles that appear after skin trauma, e.g., in walking or regular use of the hands or feet at work. The lesions are found in patients with a genetic predisposition to keratoderma.  

  • Punched out

    Appearing as if holes have been made; used to describe appearance of bones (as seen on x-ray film ) in diseases like multiple myeloma.  

  • Punchdrunk

    An imprecise term pert, to the behavioral consequences of traumatic brain injury in boxers who have received many blows to the head.
