  • Phosphate binder

    Any of various medications used to prevent hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease. Calcium carbonate taken with meals is the most commonly employed agent. In the past aluminum-containing antacids were used for this purpose, but this practice is now  voided because of the toxic accumulation of aluminum in patients with renal failure.  

  • Premature beat

    An electrical impulse that arises from a site other than the sinus node in the heart, occurring before the expected sinus beat.  

  • Powdered borax bath

    Bath consisting of ½ lb (227 g) added to 30 gal (114 L) water; 5 oz (150 ml) glycerin may be added.  

  • Primary radiation barrier

    A wall or partition that shields the radiographer and others from direct exposure to x-rays. It must be capable of adequate lead equivalency to reduce the maximum possible x-ray beam strength to the level of background exposure.  

  • Protective bandage

    A bandage that covers a part or keeps dressings in place.  

  • Plaster bandage

    A bandage stiffened with a paste of plaster of Paris, which sets and becomes very hard.  

  • Probiotic bacterium

    A bacterium that prevents illness, e.g., the Lactobacillus species found in yogurt.  

  • Principal axis

    In optics, a line that passes through the optical center or nodal point of a lens perpendicular to the surface of the lens.  

  • Pure tone audiometry

    Measurement of hearing using pure tones, which are almost completely free of extraneous noise.  

  • Parent newborn attachment

    Unconscious incorporation of the infant into the family unit. Characteristic parental claiming behaviors include seeking mutual eye contact with the infant, initiating touch with their fingertips, calling the infant by name, and expressing recognition of physical and behavioral similarities with other family members. Attachment is enhanced or impeded by the infant’s responses.
