  • Respiratory burn

    A burn to the components of the respiratory system usually caused by inhaling superheated gases.  

  • Right bundle branch block

    Defect in the conductive system of the heart in which electrical conduction down the right bundle branch is delayed. On the 12-lead EKG, it gives the widened QRS complex an RSR appearance in leads V1 and V2.  

  • Relative bradycardia

    A heart rate that is too slow for a person’s immediate physiological needs, although it may be more than 60 beats per minute. Heart rates are said to be relatively slow when they do not allow adequate circulation of blood to the brain, coronary arteries, or other vital organs.  

  • Rider’s bone

    Ossification of the distal end of the adductor muscles of the thigh, as may be seen in horseback riders. A bone growth within the adductor longus muscle located on the inner thigh, resulting from extended pressure between the muscle and the saddle during horseback riding.  

  • Reconstituted blood

    A blood product, used in transfusion therapy composed of components of blood (packed red blood cells plus plasma), which have been recombined after their separation and storage.  

  • Red-green color blindness

    Inability to see red hues; the most frequent type of color blindness.  

  • Radiation biology

    The study of the effects of radiation on living organisms.  

  • Rocking bed

    A device used to create abdominal displacement ventilation in patients with respiratory failure.  

  • Rachitic beads

    Visible swelling where the ribs join the costal cartilages, seen in rickets.  

  • Rubber bandage

    A rubber roller bandage used to apply pressure to prevent swelling or hemorrhage of a limb.
