  • Ridge slope

An obsolete term referring to the angulation established by the crest of the mandibular ridge extending from the posterior region toward the anterior area relative to the inferior border of the mandible.

  • Ridge resorption

Refers to the loss of bone in an edentulous area.

  • Ridge relationship

The positional relationship of the mandibular residual ridge to the maxillary residual ridge.

  • Ridge preservation

A surgical procedure aimed at preventing ridge collapse and preserving ridge dimension after tooth extraction, typically done for purposes of implant site development. Involves the use of hard and/or soft tissue biomaterials and/or membranes.

  • Ridge mapping

Penetration of anesthetized soft tissue with a graduated probe or caliper at several sites and transposing the information to a diagnostic cast. The shape of the residual ridge is reproduced by trimming back the stone of the cast to the corresponding depth of soft tissue.

  • Ridge lap design

    Ridge lap design

Tissue‐contacting surface of an artificial tooth prepared to accommodate the residual ridge contour on the facial, buccal, and lingual or palatal aspects. A fixed or removable prosthesis incorporating such features may be designated a ridge lapdesigned restoration.

  • Ridge lap

The surface of an artificial tooth that has been shaped to accommodate the residual ridge. The tissue surface of a ridge lap design is concave and envelops both the buccal and lingual surfaces of the residual ridge.

  • Ridge expansion

Surgical widening of a residual ridge in the lateral direction (buccolingually) with osteotomes and/or chisels, to accommodate the insertion of a dental implant, and/or bone graft.

  • Ridge defect

A deficiency in the contour of an edentulous ridge. The deficiency can be in the vertical (apicocoronal) and/or horizontal (buccolingual, mesiodistal) direction.

  • Ridge crest

The most highly contoured part of an edentulous dental ridge.
