  • Silver wiring

    Abnormal reflections of light seen on the ophthalmoscopic examination of the retina of persons with long-standing, uncontrolled hypertension.  

  • Separating wire

    A brass wire used in dentistry to separate teeth before banding them.  

  • Step wedge

    A device consisting of increasing thicknesses of absorber through which radiographs are taken to determine the amounts of radiation reaching the film.  

  • Shock wave

    A compression wave produced by a shock such as an earthquake or explosion that is characterized by a sudden change in air pressure, density, and velocity.  

  • Specific viscosity

    The internal friction of a fluid, measured by comparing the rate of flow of the liquid through a tube with that of some standard liquid, or by measuring the resistance to rotating paddles.  

  • Street virus

    A rabies virus obtained from an infected animal rather than from a laboratory strain.  

  • Slow virus infection

    An infection caused by a virus that remains dormant in the body for a prolonged period before causing signs and symptoms of illness. Such viruses may require years to incubate before causing diseases. Examples include progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.  

  • Sindbis virus

    An alphavirus typically found in South Africa or Oceania that is disseminated to humans by mosquitoes of the genus Culex. It can cause a transient febrile illness accompanied by a diffuse maculopapular rash and muscle and joint pains.  

  • Single-dose vial

    A container that holds enough medication for one patient’s immediate needs. Single-dose vials should not be reused or refilled.  

  • Subjective vertigo

    Vertigo in which the patient has the sensation of turning or rotating. Vertigo where the patient experiences a sensation of spinning around.
