  • Sacrococcygeus

    One of two small muscles (anterior and posterior) extending from the sacrum to the coccyx.  

  • Sacroanterior

    Denoting intrauterine fetal position in which the fetal sacrum is directed anteriorly. A term used in midwifery to describe the orientation of an unborn baby with its back facing the front of the mother, which is one of the positions in breech presentation. A sacral position where it is oriented forward.  

  • Sacral index

    Sacral breadth multiplied by 100 and divided by sacral length.  

  • Sacralgia

    Pain in the sacrum. Discomfort in the sacrum, the triangular bone below the lumbar vertebrae, stemming from pressure on a spinal nerve. Sacralgia is typically triggered by a disc prolapse, although in rare cases, it could be attributed to bone cancer.  

  • Sacral flexure

    Rectal curve in front of the sacrum.  

  • Sacculocochlear

    Concerning the saccule and cochlea of the ear.  

  • Saccharomycosis

    Any disease caused by yeasts (saccharomycetes).  

  • Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    A yeast used in recombinant DNA technology to manufacture proteins for medical use (e.g., in vaccine components). A yeast-like fungus with oval or spherical cells, commonly known as brewers’ or bakers’ yeast. It is responsible for alcoholic fermentation and is a very rare cause of lung disease.  

  • Saccharase

    An enzyme such as sucrase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of a disaccharide to monosaccharides.  

  • Sac

    A baglike part of an organ, a cavity or pouch, sometimes containing fluid.
