  • Situational psychosis

    Psychosis due to excessive stress in an unbearable environmental situation.  

  • Simple acute prurigo

    A simple form of prurigo that often recurs. It is thought to be caused by a reaction to bites in sensitive subjects.  

  • Secondary proteose

    The protein resulting from further hydrolysis of primary proteoses.  

  • Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein

    A protein found within cells of the adrenal glands and gonads that stimulates the conversion of cholesterol into sex hormones, corticosteroids, and mineralocorticoids.  

  • Soy protein

    A type of vegetable protein found in food products derived from soybeans. Soy-based foods also contain fiber, flavones, phytoestrogens, and other potentially beneficial components.  

  • Serum protein

    Any protein in the blood serum. The two main fractions are albumin and the globulins. Serum protein forms weak acids mixed with alkali salts; this increases the buffer effects of the blood but to a lesser extent than does cellular protein.  

  • Syringe exchange program

    A public health program for collecting used hypodermic syringes and exchanging them for sterile ones. Such programs are designed to decrease the spread of diseases (like AIDS and hepatitis C) that are transmitted by the sharing of contaminated needles.  

  • Safety profile

    The chemistry, pharmacology, therapeutic effects, and adverse effects of an administered drug or other substance.  

  • Spinous process of vertebrae

    The posteriormost part of a vertebra. This spine projects back and serves as a point of attachment for muscles of the back.  

  • Staged procedure

    Any operation undertaken in two or more separate parts, with a lull between the two stages to facilitate tissue healing or clearance of infection.
