  • Shock liver

    A colloquial term for injury to the liver resulting from insufficient blood flow, e.g., in patients who have suffered an episode of severe hypotension. A hallmark of this condition is a sudden and marked elevation in liver enzyme levels, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT).  

  • Soft liner

    The material applied to the underside of a denture to provide a soft surface contact with the oral tissues. Some acrylic or silicone resins have been made resilient and are used as liners.  

  • Supraorbital line

    The line across the forehead above the root of the exterior angular process of the frontal bone.  

  • Superior nuchal line

    One of two curved ridges on the occipital bone extending laterally from the exterior occipital crest.  

  • Sternal line

    The medial line of the sternum.  

  • Soleal line of tibia

    A line on the posterior surface of the tibia extending diagonally from below the tibial condyle to the medial border of the tibia. The soleus muscle and fascia are attached to that line.  

  • Sight line

    The line from the center of the pupil to a viewed object.  

  • Scapular line

    In anatomical descriptions, the imaginary line extending downward from the lower angle of the scapula.  

  • Soda lime

    A white granular substance consisting of a mixture of calcium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, or both.   • Sutural ligament

    Any of the thin layers that are found in a fibrous joint between bones (e.g., the bones of the skull) and are united by sutures.
