  • Secondary medical care

    Medical care of a patient by a physician acting as a consultant. The provider of primary medical care usually refers the patient for expert or specialty consultation, or a second opinion.  

  • Secondary cardiomyopathy

    Any cardiomyopathy in which the cause is either known or associated with a well-defined systemic disease. Included are cardiomyopathies associated with inflammation, toxic chemicals, metabolic abnormalities, and inherited muscle disorders.  

  • Suprarenal capsule

    A tough connective tissue capsule that encloses the adrenal gland.  

  • Secretory capillary

    Any of the very small canaliculi that are part of the secretory outflow path receiving secretion discharged from gland cells.  

  • Sacral canal

    A cavity within the sacrum. It is a continuation of the vertebral canal.  

  • Small calorie

    The amount of heat needed to change the temperature of 1 g of water 1°C.  

  • Subacromial bursa

    The large bursa lying between the acromion and the coracoacromial ligament above and the insertion of the supraspinatus muscle below. It is also known as the subdeltoid bursa,  

  • Saccular bronchiectasis

    Dilated bronchi that are of saccular or irregular shape. The proximal third to fourth branches of the bronchi are severely dilated and end blindly with extensive collapse.  

  • Shallow breathing

    Breathing in which the volume of inspired and expired air is diminished (e.g., 200 ml per breath in adults). It is common in elderly patients, patients with rib or pleural pain, or restrictive lung diseases.  

  • Southern blotting method

    A technique used in molecular genetics to analyze a small portion of DNA first by purifying it, then by controlled fragmentation, electrophoretic separation, and fixing the fragment identity using specific DNA probes. It is used most commonly for G cell and T cell rearrangement analysis, bcr gene rearrangement analysis, and fragile X syndrome analysis.
