  • Triple-lumen catheter

    A central catheter containing three separate channels or passageways.  

  • Tertiary medical care

    Medical care of a patient in a facility staffed and equipped to administer comprehensive care. In the usual situation, this level of care is provided in a large hospital to which the patient has been referred or transferred.  

  • Takotsubo cardiomyopathy

    Reversible dysfunction of the left ventricle. It may be the cause of transient heart failure that occurs after stressful events. The heart in such instances takes on a rounded shape with a narrow neck, resembling a traditional Japanese lobster trap (a “takotsubo.”)  

  • Thymic carcinoma

    A malignancy found in the anterior mediastinum, usually a squamous cell carcinoma, spindle cell carcinoma, or lymphoepithelioma. Many of these tumors release chemically active substances that cause paraneoplastic syndromes.  

  • Temporomandibular joint capsule

    The fibrous covering of the synovial joint between the skull and mandible on each side of the head.  

  • Timed vital capacity

    A test of vital capacity of the lungs expressed with respect to the volume of air that can be quickly and forcibly breathed out in a certain amount of time.  

  • Total serum calcium

    The sum of the soluble and protein-bound calcium in the blood.  

  • Thermal burn

    A burn resulting from contact with fire, hot objects, or fluids.  

  • Tooth bud

    The earliest evidence of tooth development. The tooth buds form in the dental lamina. Tooth buds for the deciduous teeth develop first (6 weeks of gestation) and more superficially; tooth buds for the permanent teeth develop later (10 weeks of gestation) and deeper in the dental lamina.  

  • Terminal bronchiole

    The next-to-last subdivision of a bronchiole, leading to the respiratory bronchioles.
