  • Wet compress

    Two or more folds of soft cloth wrung out of water at prescribed temperatures and covered with fabric.  

  • Wet colostomy

    A colostomy in the right side of the colon. The drainage from this type of colostomy is liquid.

    A general medical care clinic open to those who do not have an appointment.  

  • Wandering cell

    A rarely used term for a cell (such as a macrophage) that moves like an ameba.  

  • Winged catheter

    A catheter with little flaps at each side of the beak to help retain it in the bladder.  

  • White blood cell cast

    A leukocyte cast found in urine in acute pyelonephritis, interstitial nephritis, and at times, glomerulonephritis.  

  • Waxy cast

    A light yellowish, well-defined urinary cast probably made up of disintegrating kidney cells, found in some chronic kidney diseases, glomerulonephritis, and uncontrolled hypertension.  

  • Walking cast

    A cast or boot that allows the patient to be ambulatory.  

  • Wax carver

    A blunt instrument of varying shape to heat and carve or shape wax patterns.  

  • Wax burnout

    Removal of an invested wax pattern from a mold by heating, thereby creating the mold space for casting metal.
