Cephalometry

The science of measuring the dimensions of the head.

In dentistry, it is the determination of the permutations of angles, lines, and planes derived from tracings of landmarks on frontal and lateral radiographic head films. The measurements are used to assess growth, development, and treatment responses of the craniofacial bones as it relates to diagnosis, in‐treatment evaluations, or completed orthodontic treatment.

Measurement of the head by using certain bony points directly, or by tracing radiographs made using well-established planes for linear and angular measurements. Cephalometry is used in oral, orthodontic, and plastic surgery, e.g., in the repair of cleft palate or facial asymmetries. It is also employed in dentistry to assess growth and to determine orthodontic or prosthetic treatment plans.
