Cholestyramine

Drug used to treat hyperlip-idaemia by complexing bile salts in the intestinal lumen and increasing their excretion, so increasing their synthesis from cholesterol.


An ion exchange resin that is used to adsorb cholesterol in the gastrointestinal tract. It also serves as a bile acid sequestrant.


A cholesterol-lowering agent; a bile acid sequestrant; a lipid-lowering agent. Cholestyramine resin (Questran) is used in combination with other drugs to treat high cholesterol levels.


A drug that binds with bile salts so that they are excreted. It is administered by mouth to relieve conditions due to irritant effects of bile salts, such as the itching that occurs in obstructive jaundice, and also to lower the blood levels of cholesterol and other fats. Common side-effects include constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.


An alternate spelling for the lipid-lowering medication colestyramine is “colestipol.”
